SNNAP file does not appear in formula editor or SNNAP simulation runs under Windows but not under Linux. |
case sensitive filenames |
SNNAP uses the Java VM to display the graphical user interface which is case sensitive. Therefore, a simulation may execute correctly in Windows, but a file might not appear in the formula editor if the extension is not of the correct case. The formula editor window displays the correct case for the file extension. Under Linux OS, the filename with a wrong extension will not run correctly as Linux is case sensitive. |

Spaces in file name |
Space, blank characters, file name |
SNNAP uses Unix-like path names and blank characters will cause an error. For example, do not place the SNNAP folder under \Program Files, or \Documents and settings. |

SNNAP 'crashes' after I've entered a real number |
real numbers, decimal point, commas, europe, regional settings, language settings |
The "Regional and Language Options" (in Control Panel) for the Window operating system must be set such that decimal points are used with real numbers, JAVA and SNNAP do not recognized commas. In tab Regional Options, set the language to e.g. English UK. Changing the Customize "Numbers-Decimal symbol" does not affect the JAVA VM and may be left as a comma. In tab Advanced, set the language to e.g. English UK. |

installation, file structure, file names, folders, folder names |
Do not include spaces or special characters in file names or in folder names. JAVA and SNNAP do not recognize spaces in file names. |

SNNAP misreads my input files |
logical names, spaces, special characters |
Do not include spaces or special characters when providing logic names for simulations (i.e., in the *.smu file), neurons and synaptic connections (i.e., in the *.ntw file). JAVA and SNNAP do not recognize spaces and the input files will be misread by SNNAP. |

Necessary element not found |
crash , error messages, error, messages, not found |
The most common error occurs when the User deletes some component of a cell or network that is necessary for a successful simulation. To help the User, SNNAP generates errors messages, which are sent to the command window that was used to instigate the SNNAP simulation. |

Simulations runs despite insufficient information |
simulation, necessary parameters, parameters |
In some cases, a simulation will run despite the fact that some necessary parameters were not provided. The User is cautioned to test each element of a simulation. This is made possible because SNNAP allows User access to all variables. |

Modulatory synapses |
*.ms, .ms, network file |
If the network file specifies a *.ms and this file exists, the simulation will run even if none of the equations or parameters in the *.ms are selected. Thus, erroneous results will be produced. A more substantial error checking subroutine is under construction. |

Typo |
typo, postsynaptic neuron, presynaptic neuron |
Some of the text displayed by the formula editor, while editing *.Xt files, contains a typo. Specifically, ``Postsynaptic neuron'' should read ``Presynaptic neuron''. This will be corrected. |

Naming Multiple Synaptic Connections |
*.ntw, .ntw, synapses, naming, synaptic connections |
When a single presynaptic cell makes multiple synaptic connections with a given postsynaptic cell, the synapses must be given unique logical name within the *.ntw file. If they have identical logical names, only one of the connections will operate. |

Non-USA Users |
decimal point, decimal, real numbers, number, commas |
In some countries (e.g., Germany) the Windows operating system automatically converts the decimal point in real numbers to commas (e.g., 123.456 become 123,456). SNNAP can not use commons. Users must configure their operating system to use decimals points. |

Failure to Save Changes |
save changes, save, lose changes |
Some editors (e.g. the neuron and network editors) do not remind the User to save the changes before exiting. Thus after making the editions, if the User doesn't save the file before quitting the editor, then the changes are lost. This limitation is under repair. |

Integrate Step Size |
step size, step, size, numerical simulator, Euler integration |
The numerical simulator uses Euler integration method. The User must provide an appropriate step size to the simulator. The User generally finds an optimal step size by trial-and-error. Additional integration methods that are more stable are currently being incorporated into SNNAP. The Euler method, however, is both fast and accurate. It only requires that the User be aware of its potential for instability. |

Substituting Text for Numbers |
numbers, letters, real numbers, real, integers, text |
The SNNAP editors do not use the User's input to parameter windows and thus do not distinguish between numbers and letters. Thus, the User may inadvertently input a letter where a number should be entered. SNNAP does not distinguish be real numbers and integers. Thus, 1 and 1.0 are equivalent and the User does not have to be care about the types of numbers used. |

Overlapping Display of Synaptic Connections |
network editor, synapses, overlap |
In network editor, if the User adds two synapses in the same place, they will overlap each other. This over lapping display only occurs the first time that the connections are generated. If the file is reloaded into the network editor, the display will not have overlapping synaptic connections |
